The market seems to be shifting from traditional toys to play items with educational facets even our own Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane has emphasised the importance of play and leisure in children and young people's development and learning.
Speaking during a two-day conference entitled, 'Time to Play', and hosted by Playboard, the Minister said: "As adults we must recognise that a child playing is also a child learning. Children learn through interacting with each other and exploring the world around them. By playing games, dancing, singing and telling stories our children are developing their social, emotional, literacy and numeracy skills. These are all skills they will continue to build on in the classroom and in later life.
"My Department supports the development of learning for pre-school children, involving parents and raising their awareness of the importance of play in their child's development. Once they start school, the curriculum recognises that children learn best when they are having fun and involved in challenging activities."
